Read to Ride
Read to Ride is an effective summer reading program that encourages students aged 5 to 15 to read during summer vacation. In its 21st year, the program kicks off on Friday, May 16, 2019. This year's sponsors include Dependable Cleaners, The Patriot Ledger, Farina’s Bicycle Center, and the Bicycle Link. Prizes include bicycles, books, sporting goods, gift cards and much more. The program runs from May 17th to Aug. 12, 2019. A winner is drawn every Monday, between May and August (except July 2).
In 2018, the program successfully engaged students to read more than 2800 books and gave away 12 bicycles and many other prizes to participants. Dependable Cleaners President Christa Hagearty, who founded the program, said “In this age where children are glued to tablets and computers, I believe more than ever in encouraging reading and getting kids outside.” She estimates that more than 80,000 books have been read by children who have participated in Read to Ride over the past 20+ years.
Children winning the weekly bicycle prize, chosen on Mondays from May to August (except July 2), will have their photo taken and the photo will be published in The Patriot Ledger. Entry forms and contest details will be available at local libraries, South Shore YMCAs, local Boys & Girls Clubs and at all Dependable Cleaners locations, as well as on the company’s web site,
