Traveling with your wedding gown

Whether you are headed half-way around the world or just to the next town, you want your gown to look fresh, unwrinkled and beautiful for the ceremony.

Travel by Car
Protect your gown and arrive at your destination with a wrinkle free gown. Keep the bodice from being crushed while it is in transit by stuffing with as much tissue as possible or with a bust form. Buffer the folds of the gown’s skirt with more tissue. Place the gown in either an extra large garment bag or use large bed sheets to protect the gown. Hang the gown so the bodice is facing the car door. That will assure the front of the gown flows front to back across the back seat creating less wrinkles. The bust form or tissue will protect the bodice from wrinkling.

Travel by Plane
Most airlines say they’ll hang your gown in the closest “as long as there is room” – unfortunately if there isn’t room, you’ll need to be prepared to place it in the overhead compartment or placed with the luggage below. Unless your gown is very informal, you will need a large box or an extra suitcase to protect it.

As certified Wedding Gown Specialists, Dependable Cleaners can properly prepare your gown for shipping. We will line the packing box with layers of acid-free tissue. The gown will be placed across the box and prior to folding, layers of tissue will be placed upon the gown to buffer against wrinkling. This box will then be placed into a sturdier box with carrier handle for you to carry onboard and place your gown in the overhead compartment.
 
Travel by Ship
The same advice applies to water travel because you can carry your gown with you on board. If you are getting married at sea, most cruise lines offer pressing services.
 
Quick Fixes for Pesky Wrinkles
Hang your gown on the bathroom door, turn the shower to hot, close the door and let the shower run until the room is filled with steam, which relaxes most creases. Invest in a portable hand steamer you can use whenever you travel. Guard against spotting water sensitve fabrics such as silk by wrapping the head of the steamer in a small towel.
