Do you have a 2020 New Year’s Resolution? If you don’t have one, here’s a great idea: Make your New Year’s Resolution about giving back to yourself. It’s the perfect time of year to look back on your lifestyle choices and how you feel mentally and physically. Give back to yourself for all of the hard work you do and the time you give to others by creating a New Year’s Resolution to put more time into self care. Here are some ideas on how to set self care goals and leave yourself feeling better than ever in 2020!
First, it’s important to understand what self care is, and what it isn’t. Self care is taking action to improve not only your body, but your mental health and overall well being. It can really be anything that gives you a new outlook on life, calms you, and gives you the time to do things that you enjoy and cherish. It is filling your own bucket instead of everyone else’s. We know, self care isn’t always easy. As wives, mothers, fathers, sons, friends, we are constantly trying to give back to others. But, here’s the thing. You need to be okay to be able to give to others. So, take time for yourself, too. Prioritize it in 2020.
Some things to consider when crafting your self care goals is to make sure you are thinking about your “intrinsic” goals. These are things that are personally rewarding and inspire you, not what inspires others. Your self care goals do not have to add up to what the world wants to see from you, but what you want to give back to yourself. Consider what your values, interests, and beliefs are and incorporate those into your self care routine. Make sure that you are framing all of your goals in a positive mindset rather than a negative one. For example, I will meditate to ease my stress, rather than I will exercise to lose weight.
As with any New Year’s Resolution, make sure that your goals are reasonable and attainable. Set weekly goals that are easy to stick with that will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed in 2020.
