If you rent a floor of a triple-decker off Dot Ave, laundry is a stairs problem before it is a soap problem. A laundromat in Dorchester solves the stairs and the waiting in one stop. Our shop is at 1141 Dorchester Avenue, between the Savin Hill and Fields Corner stops on the Red Line, and the machines there are sized for the loads a basement hookup cannot take.
What can you get done in one trip to a laundromat in Dorchester?
A week of ordinary wash for a household of four, plus one oversized item, fits in a single visit. The large-capacity washers take bedding and bulky things that a home machine turns into a wet knot. So the comforter and the everyday laundry run side by side instead of over two separate evenings.
That matters more on a triple-decker street than it does in a neighborhood of single-family houses. The washer in the cellar is shared, it is small, and someone else’s towels are already in it.
How long does a full load take?
Long enough to be worth planning around, short enough that most people wait it out. Cycle times are posted on the machines, and the usual routine is to bring a book or walk up to Savin Hill Park and come back.
If you would rather not sit at all, drop the bag at the counter and pick it up later. Wash, dry and fold is for the trips where you have the laundry but not the hour.
The items that send people here in the first place
Most first visits are not about socks. They are about one thing that will not fit anywhere else.
Comforters. Quilts that have been folded in a closet since April. Mattress pads. Sleeping bags after a week on the Cape. Moving blankets, especially in late August, when half the block is packing. Anything down-filled needs room to tumble, and room is the whole point of a commercial machine.
Bring the bedding in a bag you can carry up a flight of stairs, not a bin. That is the difference between one trip and two on a street where the front hall is narrow.
The wash side uses biodegradable soap. The dry cleaning side uses GreenEarth® technology, a silicone-based method described in detail by GreenEarth Cleaning. Dependable Cleaners has been perc-free for over twenty years. Things come back odor-free and gentle against skin, which stops being a small detail when the item is what you sleep under.
September 1 in Dorchester is its own season
Boston turns over most of its leases on one day, and Dorchester feels it harder than almost anywhere. Trucks double-park on Dot Ave. Narrow staircases fill with mattresses. Everything that lived in a closet ends up on a curb for an afternoon.
Two practical notes. If you are the one moving, the City of Boston will let you reserve the parking spaces in front of your building for the truck, and the paperwork is worth it. And the bedding that came out of the old apartment almost never goes straight onto the new bed. Bring it here first.
Where we are, and what the block is like
The shop is at 1141 Dorchester Avenue, Boston, MA 02125. Open 8:00 to 7:00 Monday through Friday and 8:00 to 4:00 on Saturday. The phone is 617-506-1455, and the map is on the Dorchester location page.
One thing worth knowing before you plan the trip: there are no Sunday hours at this shop. Saturday closes at 4:00, which is earlier than the weekday close, so the last useful window of the weekend is Saturday morning. The 24-hour drop box on the building is for dry cleaning, not for wash.
It is a walking block. Fields Corner station is down the avenue, Savin Hill is up it, and both sit on the Ashmont branch of the Red Line. Street parking on Dot Ave is what street parking on Dot Ave has always been, so most regulars walk with a rolling bag or pull in for a few minutes at a time.
The same shop handles dry cleaning, laundry and tailoring. The shirt that needs a button and the bag that needs washing are one errand.
What if you would rather not carry it at all?
Then do not. Free home and office pickup and delivery covers Dorchester with no minimum order, so a single bag counts as a real order.
Students work this out fastest, which is why it runs through our guide to laundry in Boston for college students as well.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to stay while my laundry runs?
No. Run the machines yourself, or leave the bag with the counter and collect it later. Plenty of people drop off on the way to the T and pick up on the way back.
Can you wash a king-size comforter?
Yes. The large-capacity machines are sized for king bedding, mattress pads and sleeping bags. That is the main reason people make the trip rather than using a home washer.
Is the Dorchester laundromat open 24 hours?
No. The shop is open 8:00 to 7:00 Monday through Friday and 8:00 to 4:00 on Saturday. There is a 24-hour drop-off box for dry cleaning, which is a different service from a 24-hour laundromat.
What soap do you use?
Biodegradable soap for wash, and GreenEarth® technology for dry cleaning.
Do you pick up in Dorchester?
Yes. Home and office, free, no minimum.
Next step
If the laundry is already in a bag by the door, schedule a pickup and let it leave the building without you. If you would rather see the shop, we are at 1141 Dorchester Avenue, eight to seven on weekdays.
